Emanative – Space

Emanative - Space

Its been so sticky the last days and I am not really in the mood to write another one of my poor reviews or sit in front of the computer much longer, so I will keep this one short. This Emanative album called Space has been on rotation since its release in May and its still sounding good (well I am not sick of it after many listens). Think Sun-Ra or Nostalgia 77 and your kinda there. Top stuff…..

Mitsu 7"

One of Japan’s finest beat makers in the underground hip hop scene – DJ Mitsu,  is back with a new LP for 2009. This 7″ happens to be the 1st sampler for the album which is available on the legendary Jazzy Sport imprint from Shibuya. NYC’s Brownswood representive Mr José James blesses this release with some sweet & soulful vocals. Essential stuff…………

Rollocast 9 ammunition

009

My fiancé was out this eve so I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get the Rollocast back on track. I pulled out a few new soul gems, a couple of joints that have incredible drum breaks, some nice hip hop bits and then pressed record whilst sipping on a beer. Have a good weekend and enjoy volume 9.

Gilles Peterson - Madlib and J-Rocc Takeover

J.Rocc on 1Xtra   //   J.Rocc/Madlib on Radio 1 (from Stones Throw Site) // Full Radio Mix

Yessir, the J.Rocc & Madlib takeover that I have been waiting for finally went to air last night on Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 show. There isn’t a whole lot to say about it except check it out sooner rather than later. Also I suggest you make an additional 2 hours free so that you can digest the J.Rocc Benji B showdown too. Photos via Stones Throw and more info over at the BBC. What a treat !!! Fritz the Cat

Straight from the darkened alleyways of outer Paris comes the ACatCalledFritz. His 1st ever offering is a super tight 3 track 7″. On one side you have the neo soul goodness called Slow Down which features the dreamy vocals of K-Ro and Julien Mercier on the trumpet. The flip has 2 instrumental joints with the standout being As A Mug. Deejay Lyrik‘s cuts on each track compliment ACatCalledFritz‘s production. Releases of this standard are a rarity in 2009.

Mood Mosaic Tredici... Bambino !!!

Just when you thought it was over, the groovey Mood Mosaic series returns with Volume 13. I picked up the limited edition picture disc sampler because I thought it looked hot, even though it has only 1/2 the tunes that are available on the CD/LP versions. It has couple of more known soul gems from Leon Hayward & O.V. Wright plus rarities from The Lost Generation & Flower. These Italian unofficial bootleg compilations are not easy to come by but well worth the money if you manage to stumble over some of the volumes. Sex sells……

Photograph is defo in a the running for the minimal dnb tune of the year

Yes there is some DNB worth getting excited about. Leaders of the minimal movement, Instra:mental, deliver the electronic & soulful goods on their new Sepia Tones EP. The overall product is done proper, coffee coloured vinyl (limited to 500 copies) with a super slick black packaging……

Quetzal – Vision

June 3, 2009

Award tour

French beatmaker Quetzal drops his 1st solo long player entitled Vision. The 25 track album is a collection of influences, flavours and directions spurred by his recent ventures to the Caribbean and Latin America. It will definitely appeal to fans of Tribute or those in need of some warm and laidback instrumental grooves whilst chilling out at home. An extremely tidy release and my CD pick of the week.
